How to FDisk Windows XP on a Laptop

FDisk is an application that creates partitions on a hard drive to store files and hold your laptop's operating system. FDisk, a utility packaged with Windows, deletes all files from the hard drive, creating a clean slate for the user. Laptop users will use FDisk to reconfigure a hard drive from scratch or to install a new hard drive.

• Windows installation CD

Instructions

1. Insert the Windows installation CD into your computer. Restart the computer to boot to the CD. Press "Enter" at the welcome screen.

2. Press "F8" on your keyboard to accept the end-user license agreement. When Windows asks if you want to install or repair Windows, press the "Esc" key to exit that screen.

3. Use the keyboard's arrow keys to highlight a partition you want to reconfigure or unused hard-disk space. Press "Enter."

4. Press "Enter" to accept the maximum size you can make your partition. Alternatively, you can adjust the size of the partition you want to create. Press "Enter."

Tips & Warnings

• Make sure to back up any important date files before using FDisk on an existing hard drive. FDisk deletes all information from the partition you are working on, and you won't be able to retrieve it.
