Step 1
Write down a few ideas for domain names. Try to think of different wording combinations. Make note that a domain name should represent your site, be easy to remember for the visitor, and most importantly be unique.
-
Step 2
Go to a website and perform a domain names search. These sites include Register, Name Boy, and Go Daddy (See Resources.)Name Boy is recommended because it provides all the available domain names related to your search. For example if insurance.com is unavailable, it will list insurancegroup.com and other possibilities.
-
Step 3
Go to domain name auctions. These sites include Go Daddy and Sedo (See Resources)and is a good place to find cheap domain names. At domain name auctions, you have the option to buy domain names that have either expired, are about to expire, or are up for sale by the owner. Some names are considered to be premium domain names and ask for a higher price than other listings.
-
Step 4
Look for hosting packages that include a free domain name. A majority of hosting sites such as Blue Host (See Resources) include a free domain name with their hosting package.
-
Step 5
Choose the domain name extension. Typical extensions include .com, .biz, .gov, .org, .info, and .net. For the average website .com is the most widely used. However if your company is a non profit organization than .org would be preferred. Buying all of the extensions for one domain name is one way to make sure that no one else uses your idea.
-
Step 6
Add the domain name to your shopping cart at the particular domain name website that you are using. Choose how long you want to own your domain name for. Registration for one year excluding a domain bought at an auction is about $15 with each following year slightly decreasing in price. For example if you decide to buy a domain name for two years it would be $28 rather than $30.
