Many people use self storage for their needs while moving or building a home. Self storage cost is generally low, and is paid once a month. Storage buildings are usually in gated areas with padlocks and security systems. If you are thinking about renting a self storage unit, here is a guide to help you estimate self storage cost.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide how much storage space you will need. A small, 5x5 foot self storage unit can cost around $40-$50 per month. On average, 10x20 storage units cost $95-$155 per month, and very large units like a 20x20 can cost $225 per month. These figures vary by location and company, so check with your local self storage company for their rates.

  2. Step 2

Add the cost of climate control if you plan on storing things like pianos or art. Climate control means that the temperature is kept between 40 and 90 degrees, and the humidity is controlled. If you need a climate controlled unit, add up to $100 per month to the self storage cost.

  3. Step 3

Most self storage companies will require a deposit before you move your belongings in. This usually adds around $30 to the self storage cost.

  4. Step 4

Ask your self storage company if a lock is included in the rental price. If not, you can add a $16-$20 weather proof padlock to the self storage cost.

  5. Step 5

If you are a senior, you can take 10% off of your rent if your self storage company has a senior discount.
