A deck stain enhances the colors of a deck by adding rich hues and a shiny gloss. Staining can also protect your deck from the damaging effects of sunlight and moisture. During the staining process, droplets or splashes of staining solution can end up on your house's vinyl siding and detract from your home's appearance. Move quickly to remove deck staining from your siding to prevent permanent stains.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Protective eyewear and mask
  • Bucket
  • Dish soap
  • Rag or sponge
  • Cleaning solution
  • Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (optional)
  1. Step 1

Put on protective eyewear and a face mask. The fumes from the deck stain and cleaning solutions can be caustic and burn your eyes and nasal passages.

  2. Step 2

Make a mildly soapy solution in a bucket using hot water and ordinary dish soap. Dip a rag or sponge into the solution and immediately wipe the deck stain splash as soon as possible. Dab continuously for five minutes to soften the stain.

  3. Step 3

Use a commercial cleaning solution if using an latex- or water-suspended staining solution. Examples include Mötsenböcker's Lift-Off product line, such as its PVR Paint & Varnish Remover and #5 Latex Paint Remover, and HomeCare Labs' Greased Lightning cleaning solutions. Apply as directed by the specific product's guidelines, soaking serious stains in the solution for 10 minutes or longer before scrubbing or wiping away.

  4. Step 4

Use a PVC cleaner such as Premier's PVC Cleaner if trying to remove a petroleum-suspended deck stain from the siding. Such cleaners can typically be obtained at hobby and craft stores. Alternatively, use an oil paint remover such as Mötsenböcker's #4 Graffiti Remover. Apply and wait for 10 minutes for the cleaner to dissolve the stain's oil base before using a general cleaner to wipe away.

  5. Step 5

Wipe with water and a rag and review your cleaning results. If needed, repeat Steps 2 and 3 if staining remains. Allow to dry. Depending on your climate, this may take several hours.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wiping the stain immediately after the splashing reduces the time the stain has to set, making removal easier and reducing the risk of permanent staining of the siding. Small dried specks of staining solution can often be quickly removed using a scrubbing pad such as Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.
  • Do not remove staining in a confined area, as the buildup of fumes can become hazardous.
