  1. How to Use Nystatin

    • 1

Check to see if you have ringworm. Ringworm is a fungus that causes an itchy rash that typically looks like a raised ring on your skin, but can sometimes just be a standard-looking red rash. It is commonly mistaken for other types of skin disorders, such as eczema. Have your doctor or dermatologist inspect the area to verify a ringworm infection.

    • 2

Get a prescription for a topical ointment or cream containing Nystatin. Nystatin is a antifungal drug marketed under the brand names Mycostatin, Pedi-Dri, and Nystop in the United States.

    • 3

Clean the area. Wet a cotton swab with hydrogen peroxide and rub gently on the area. Allow to air dry.

    • 4

Apply the Nystatin cream or ointment. Squeeze a small portion of the cream or ointment onto a cotton swab and smear onto the affected ringworm area once in the morning and once in the evening. Do not cover or bandage the area.

    • 5

Continue applying the cream or ointment for 14 days, even if the ringworm infection appears to have been killed. If you forget to apply a dose of the Nystatin, apply it as soon as possible unless it is almost time for the next application of Nystatin.

    How to Use Bleach

    • 6

Pour two cups of water into a plastic bottle. Add 1/3 cup of sodium hydroxide-free bleach. Close the bottle and swish vigorously to mix thoroughly.

    • 7

Moisten a cotton swab with the bleach-and-water solution.

    • 8

Pat the moist cotton swab on the affected ringworm area once a day for seven days, or until the ringworm infection has dried up gone away. If the ringworm infection remains after seven days, consult a dermatologist for prescription medication such as Nystatin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Prevent ringworm by reducing infection risks. Don't share sports equipment and do not walk barefoot in moist, humid environments such as locker rooms. Store the Nystatin cream or ointment away from direct light, moisture and heat.

  • Some individuals may experience a skin irritation when using Nystatin. Consult your doctor if such an irritation occurs.
