How to Learn Cheerleading Cheers

Cheerleading is a sport that requires physical fitness and memory. When the crowd at a sporting event needs to get fired up, the cheerleaders are there to do the job. Cheerleading is an organized activity that requires cheerleaders to learn routines and cheers. The routines are typically anywhere from one to three minutes in length. One to three minutes can seem like an eternity when you are trying to learn the cheers, but there is a way to learn cheerleading cheers and the key is repetition.

  • Write up a sheet of all the cheers. This sheet should have all the cheers and the words to them. Make sure they are word for word, exactly how they will be performed.

  • Start out with one cheer. Break up the cheer into small segments. Take the first two to three words and rehearse it until you have mastered it. For instance if the first line read, "we're extraordinary, we're rough, we're tough, we're bold," you would only take the first two words, which would be, "we're extraordinary." Master the first two words by repeating them.

  • Add another segment. Take another two to three words and rehearse them over and over until you have them down.

  • Combine the first two segments together and repeat them to see how well you learned them. Continue to add segments until you have learned the whole cheer. Repetition is the key to learning cheers.
