Several websites offer free email. The top three sites are hotmail.com, gmail.com and yahoo.com. Gmail is part of Google. AOL and local cable companies also have many users. Some cable companies, like Comcast, give users an email address when they sign up for Internet access. Use email addresses for communicating with others and receiving and other items. Email's version of junk mail is called spam. Identify spam by the email address and the subject line. Delete spam or send it to the spam folder.

1. Choose a domain. Different domains allow different amounts of storage. Gmail and Yahoo, for example, have no storage limits. Hotmail offers up to five gigabytes of storage. User interface also plays a part in the decision. Look at the sites to see the type of format you like. Gmail is very simple. Yahoo is more decorated. Hotmail is basic.

2. Sign up at the website you choose. Type in a user name. The user name is the first part of the email address. You may be asked to fill out other information like your name and address.

3. Submit the form. The provider tells you if your information is accepted, when you can log in to use it and what your email address is. Log in with your user name and password. Your email address is your user name@domain name. The domain name is the site where you signed up.
