Three-dimensional (3D) chatrooms are one way for people to connect on the Internet. Start by creating an online persona known as an avatar, which you can customize with clothing and accessories. Then design a 3D space such as a house, complete with furniture and décor. Finally, invite others to your space and chat interactively using text messages.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Register for a free account with an online 3-D chat website such as Moove, whose link is in Resources. (Note that as part of the sign-up process, Moove asks you to invite friends via email and social websites. These invitations are optional and easily bypassed if you click the "Next" link in the lower left of the web page.) Download and install any related software such as Moove Roomancer.

  2. Step 2

Run the program to display the program window. Create an avatar by clicking the "Actor" button at the top. Define your actor's look and clothes. When you are satisfied, click the "Exit" button to return to the main program window.

  3. Step 3

Define the chatroom by clicking on the "Room" button at the top and then choosing "Create New Room." The program displays a "Properties" dialogue where you can change various characteristics of the room.

  4. Step 4

Change the name of the room but accept all the defaults for now. Click the "OK" button to save your selections. Your avatar appears in the new room, which by default is a square Living Room. Explore your space by using the arrow keys to make your avatar wander. You can rotate your view or zoom in and out by moving the "Rotate" and "Zoom" sliders at the bottom of the window.

  5. Step 5

Decorate your room by clicking on the "Room" button and choosing an option. Room Painter lets you change the current wall and floor textures. Furniture adds new furniture like sofas and tables. "Decorations" inserts décor such as windows and pillows. You can easily drag and drop new pieces to any location in the room. Right-click on an object to rotate or remove it.

  6. Step 6

Open your room to others by clicking the "Room" button and choosing "Properties" to display the "Properties" dialogue. Click the first button next to "This room is locked" and choose "Open". Click "OK" to save your choices. Your room is now open to visitors.

  7. Step 7

Invite people to your chat room by first clicking the "Community" button to display the "Community" page. Then click the "Meet and Chat" button in the left column to display the "Meet and Chat" dialogue. Scroll through the list of members who are currently available. Click on a member name to invite him to your room.

Tips & Warnings
  • Moove Online is generally free to use. However, you can buy credits, which you then use to get advanced features such as additional clothes and furniture. The program can be a bit daunting for first-time users. If you need help, click the "Help" button at the top of the window.
