How to Close Background Programs for Faster Computer and Internet Speed

Windows has a number of processes that must be kept running to maintain the operating systems. These processes have little to no effect on the performance of the computer or the Internet connection. What slows down the computer or the Internet connection are the programs you download and install over time. Most programs start automatically when the computer is turned on, and your computer's performance will suffer as you install more programs that do this. Close unnecessary background programs using the built-in System Configuration and Task Manager utilities on your PC.

Instructions

  1. System Configuration

    • 1

Click the "Start" button in the Windows taskbar. Type "sys" and click "System Configuration." The System Configuration utility opens.

    • 2

Click the "Startup" tab. Remove checks from all of the background programs you don't want to open at startup. Do not worry about corrupting the startup process as all of the programs in the list are nonessential.

    • 3

Click the "Apply" button. Click the "OK" button. When prompted, restart the computer.

    Task Manager

    • 4

Press the following keys simultaneously: "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete." The Task Manager opens.

    • 5

      Click the "Processes" tab.

    • 6

Right-click the programs you want to close and click "End Process Tree."
