Silicone caulk is used in areas that are frequently exposed to water, such as around a bathtub or sink. It is the strongest type of caulk and can be difficult to remove. A strong solvent, such as a tile solvent, along with plenty of elbow grease may work to remove dried silicone caulk.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tile solvent
  • Utility blade
  1. Step 1

While wearing protective gloves, apply tile solvent with a cotton swab directly to the silicone caulking.

  2. Step 2

Allow the solvent to penetrate the caulking for at least 15 minutes.

  3. Step 3

Use a utility blade to scrape away the caulking once it has been softened by the solvent.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the process until all of the caulking has been removed. Wipe the area clean with a solution of dishwashing detergent and water.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dried caulk is much more difficult to remove than caulk that is still in the putty stage. If possible, remove the caulk before it sets.
  • Tile solvent can dull bathroom and kitchen surfaces, so try to limit the application of the solvent to the caulked areas. Do not use tile solvent to remove caulk from fabrics or carpeting--it will damage the fibers. If silicone caulk has spilled onto a fabric, apply a solution of dishwashing detergent and water to the affected area, then pull it loose with your fingers.
