How to Touch Up Paint on a Motorcycle Fender
Even the smallest scratch on any part of a motorcycle can be highly noticeable. The fenders are the largest painted areas of the motorcycle. This is where scratches will be the most noticeable. Large, deep scratches or gouges can be repainted, but that can get expensive. If the scratch or chip is small, it is much cheaper to use touch-up paint to repair the fender.

- Sandpaper - 300 grit and 900 grit, specifically
- Wax and grease remover
- Microfiber towel
- Touch-up paint
- Hobby brush
- Liquid polishing compound
- Orbital polisher

Sand the problem area with 300 grit sandpaper. Sand just enough to smooth the hard edge created by the paint where it meets the visible bare metal. The paint adheres much better to a sanded surface and will last longer.

Wipe the area with wax and grease remover and a microfiber cloth to remove any debris or oil from fingerprints. These things can cause imperfections in the paint or not allow it to adhere to the surface.

Apply the touch-up paint to the area with a small hobby paint brush. These brushes are higher quality than most automotive touch-up brushes. Use three or four thin coats, allowing each coat to dry for 15 minutes.

Once the paint has dried, sand the area with wet 900 grit sandpaper. Remember, too, to keep the sandpaper wet as you're working. This levels the paint and makes it smooth. Rinse the area and let it dry.

Apply a small amount of liquid polishing compound to the area. Use an orbital polisher to work in the compound. This polishes the paint and blends the touched-up area with the fender. For best results, polish the entire fender.
