How to Add a Remote Switch to a Light Fixture

Once, the idea of turning lights on and off remotely was relegated to sci-fi novels and the "Jetsons," alongside daily food pills and robots who brushed your teeth for you. But with recent technological advancements, remote light switch fixtures have gone from futuristic dreams to practical possibilities. All it takes is a little bit of shopping and some basic installation, and you can be living in a home of the future today.

Things You'll Need

  • Remote light switch kit
  • Lightbulb attachments
  • Shop around on the Internet for a remote light switch kit. Many companies, such as X10, Monster, Leviton and Lamson, make such kits--find the one that's right for your home set-up and budget (see Resources).

  • Install an attachment into the light bulb socket of your lamp. Screw this attachment in place, and then screw the bulb into the attachment.

  • Make sure your remote is communicating properly with the wireless attachments by testing it out at various ranges. Then install the remote switch wherever you please.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to follow the instructions that go with your kit--each kit will have its own idiosyncrasies that you'll need to work out.
