Golf: Equipment

So you want to take up golf. There is so much equipment available out there it can get very confusing and very expensive very fast. Here is a basic list of what you need to get started.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First off, I am not a pro golfer, instructor or even a scratch golfer, but I love to golf. Many will take issue with some of my comments, but I am okay with that. Read on this is basic info and you can build from there.

  2. Step 2

Clubs. Yes you will need clubs. Try to get a complete set with the same grip. If you are very tall or short, you will obviously need shorter or taller clubs. If you buy used, make sure they are somewhat recent models. If you can't get a full set, try to have a driver, 3 wood and maybe the odds or even irons. Make sure you have a pitching wedge. I would give a little more thought to the putter. I have a very inexpensive putter that has lasted me a couple of golf club sets. I like it and I put well with it. I have tried a few putters and the only ones I have liked better are still a little out of my range.

  3. Step 3

Golf bag/cart. Unless you plan on duct taping your clubs together, you will need a bag. If you plan on walking most of the time, you should consider a stand up bag or at least a nice cart. Like the putter, these are pieces you may keep longer than you clubs, especially the pull cart so give some thought as to what you buy.

  4. Step 4

Golf balls and tees. I started with Top Flite balls and that's what I buy over an over again. I know there are better balls out there, but they all seem to sink in the water about the same. Your ball or will only be as good as your swing. The ball won't fix your slice, you have to do that. At times I think I can tell the difference between balls but I think it will be some time before it could make a difference. As for tees, get a couple lengths and give them a try.

  5. Step 5

Shoes. I didn't think golf shoes would make a huge difference but I have to say they do. You don't need them to start, just wear a good running shoe, but as you get going you will want them.

  6. Step 6

Secret weapons. Range finders, mega super duper drivers, super distance balls, deluxo magnetic putters and other so called "secret weapons" don't do much for me. If any of them were what they claim to be, they would be in every bag. The biggest secret weapon is a three part formula: 1.practice, 2. practice and finally, 3.follow up with more practice.

  7. Step 7

That's the basics according to me. If you can afford lessons, go for it. I once took a series of group lessons that cost me $25 for 5 lessons. That was the best golf purchase I have made to date. So, start with the basics and build from there and you will love and hate golf like I do.
