A toilet that rocks back and forth can be unsanitary. If it is not fixed the toilet itself can be damaged beyond repair. This is something a homeowner can do themselves. Follow these steps to fix a rocking toilet.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • shims
  • grout
  • toilet flange bolts and nuts
  • wax ring
  1. Step 1

Inspect the floor around the toilet. If the floor is wet check for leaks at the water connections and between the bowl and tank. If no leaks are found then flush the toilet a few times. Look for moisture coming from underneath. If the water is coming from under the toilet then the wax ring will need to be replaced first.

  2. Step 2

Tighten the flange nuts. These are the nuts on the sides under the plastic caps. The nuts need to be snug. Do not over tighten them because that will break the base. The purpose of these nuts is to hold the toilet in place, not to keep it from rocking.

  3. Step 3

Level the toilet bowl. Place shims between the bowl and the floor. This should temporarily stop it from rocking. Sit on the seat to make sure. Make adjustments now.

  4. Step 4

Mix grout to the consistence of toothpaste. Mix about one cup. Use your finger to push the grout between the toilet bowl and the floor. Continue adding grout until no more fits under. Go all the way around the base.

  5. Step 5

Wipe all excess grout off of the toilet. Make sure you do not remove to much. If you do then add more. Use your finger to form a nice even bead all the way around. Do not use the toilet until everything has dried.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the same color grout as your tile or use white if you do not have tile.
  • Do not over tighten the toilet flange bolts.
  • Caulk is not a permanent way to stop the toilet from rocking.
