Hide Your Facebook Profile

You may need to hide your Facebook profile from your boss for several reasons. Maybe you don't want photos from a wild night out going public. Maybe you would like to keep your wall posts and profile information away from his prying eyes. Maybe your status posts regularly includes remarks about how much you hate your job. Whatever the reason, hide your Facebook profile from your boss to avoid repercussions at work.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your Facebook account and click the "Account" heading located at the top right of the page. Choose "Privacy Settings" from the drop-down menu. Click the "Custom" button under "Control Your Default Privacy" to hide your status updates and photos that you post to your profile from a Facebook app that doesn't have an inline audience selector, such as the Facebook App for iPhone. Type the name or email address of your boss in the "Hide this from" section.

    • 2

Scroll down in the Privacy Settings window until you reach "Limit the Audience for Past Posts." Click "Manage Past Post Visibility." This opens a window where you can click "Limit Old Posts." This choice changes all content you've shared with the public or a wide audience in the past to "Friends Only" status.

Scroll further down in the Privacy Settings window and click on "Manage Block Lists." Type the name or email address for your boss into the "Block Users" section to immediately remove him from your friend list. When you block someone, he cannot find you in a Facebook search, see your profile or interact with you through Facebook channels, such as wall posts or messages. Any Facebook ties you currently have with a person you block are broken.

Since the people you share with can share your information with others, after you have blocked your boss, he may still be able to view pictures of you if he is on the friend list of one of your friends. You can't prevent this from happening but you can take a few precautionary measures to decrease the chances your boss can see you. Remove the tags on all pictures of yourself taken by people you know who are Facebook friends with your boss. Also, don't ask any of your coworkers or friends of your boss to become Facebook friends with you.

Don't post any information or pictures associated with your name that could constitute grounds for your dismissal on Facebook. Your profile should not contain any material that could get you in trouble at work. If your friends have any "inappropriate" pictures of you they have posted in the past, ask them to remove them and do the same with your own photos. Despite privacy settings, a determined individual may find a way to see your information. Better safe than sorry.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you and your boss are both members of the same Facebook group, privacy settings have no effect. Decide whether you want to remain in the group or be cautious what you post to it.
