To operate a plumbing business in the state of Kentucky, you must obtain a master plumber license. This license differs from a journeyman license, which is needed to install plumbing. An individual looking to get a master plumbing license must meet certain requirements, submit an application and application fee, take an exam and possess a journeyman license for two years prior to taking the exam.
Determine if you are eligible to apply for a plumbing license. A master plumber applicant must be at least 18 years of age, of good moral character and a citizen of the United States (or a resident alien authorized to work in the United States).
Download and complete the Master License Application found at test.ohbc.ky.gov. Submit your application and fee (please see Master License Application Information under References for the most current fee) to the address noted on the application form.
Take the master plumber exam. Once your application is accepted and approved, you will be notified of your examination date. You have a maximum of 2 ½ hours to complete the exam, which contains written questions and charts to analyze. The exam is based on the Kentucky State Plumbing Law, Regulation and Code book. If you receive a passing grade on the exam, you are issued a master plumbing license. An additional fee applies for the issuance of the license.
