How to Connect a DTV Converter Box

On June 12, 2009, television broadcasts nationwide switched from analog to digital format. The conversion left many without TV service despite a yearlong government promotion to educate the public. Analog televisions can display digital broadcasts with a DTV (Digital Television) converter box. Learn how to set up and become more familiar with a DTV converter box in the steps below.

Things You'll Need:

  • Coaxial Cable or Audio/Video Cables
  • Antenna
  1. Step 1
    Power-on your converter box.

    Plug the power cord from your DTV converter box into a standard wall socket.

  2. Step 2

    Connect your antenna to the "In" connection on the back of the converter box. Make sure the antenna is connected to a wall socket.

  3. Step 3
    Connect your converter box and television.

    Connect a coaxial cable to the "Out" connection on the back of the converter box. Connect the opposite end of the cable to the rear of your television.

  4. Step 4
    Enjoy the benefits of crystal clear DTV.

    Turn the television to the proper channel for your digital converter box. This is usually the "Aux" input. Keep the television set to this channel or input. The DTV comes with a remote and will be the primary control for the TV from this point forward.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your television is not cable ready, you will need to use standard audio/video cables to connect your DTV converter box. These cables are color-coded (red, white and yellow). Connect them from the DTV converter box to the rear of the television.
