How to Get Ink Out of Leather thumbnail
Ink can be a tough customer.

Whether it's the work of a runaway pen or mischievous toddler, getting ink off leather is no easy task. Part of what makes it so difficult is that what may work for one piece of leather may not work for another. In addition, some of the treatments that are most effective at removing the ink stain could potentially remove the color of the leather as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Consider hiring a professional to clean the leather. The Leather Apparel Association warns against trying to remove the ink yourself at home, as any home remedy may have a risk of discoloring the leather.

    • 2

Try a professional leather-cleaning product. Some popular brands include Guardsman, Ink Off and Leather Magic, all which usually can be found at hardware stores. Read the labels and use your judgment to determine which product would work best for your situation.

    • 3

Try using warm water and dishwashing soap. You may have to scrub and rinse several times before you see the ink begin to fade.

    • 4

Try rubbing alcohol or any product with rubbing alcohol in it. Common household items that contain rubbing alcohol include cologne, perfume, hairspray and acetone-free nail polish remover. Just about anything with alcohol in it will help lift the ink stain. Beware, however, that this is one of the riskiest methods. It should only be used as a last resort.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always conduct a spot test on an inconspicuous area of the leather before putting any product or substance on the ink stain.
