Turmeric is an age-old Ayurvedic remedy for treating a cough. Providing overnight relief, turmeric milk is a popular remedy for treating coughs and colds in homes across India. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties that helps in reducing the severity of coughs. In addition, it has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and immune building properties, that make the herb invaluable for the upcoming flu season. Before reaching for a cough syrup, or visiting a doctor, drinking a cup (or two) of turmeric milk for relief is certainly worth a try. Making it is super easy. Here is how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Milk /unsweetened soy milk/ almond milk
  • Turmeric powder
  • Honey
  • Crushed peppercorns
  1. Step 1

Warm a cup of organic low fat milk, either 1% or 2%, in a saucepan on the stove. If you are lactose intolerant, lactose free milk, or unsweetened soy milk, or almond milk work equally well.

  2. Step 2

Add half a teaspoon of turmeric to the milk, and stir till the turmeric is completely dissolved. At this point the milk in the saucepan will look bright yellow. Bring the milk to a gentle boil and turn off the stove.

  3. Step 3

Pour the milk (with turmeric) into a cup and a add a teaspoon (or two if you want the milk to be sweeter and stir until the honey is completely dissolved.

  4. Step 4

Crush 4 peppercorns in a mortar and pestle and add to the milk. Black pepper is said to increase the bio-availability of turmeric. Skip this step if you are making the turmeric milk for a child, or for a person with a severe cough.

  5. Step 5

Drink the turmeric milk before going to bed at night to get relief from a cough. The milk is especially soothing to a child who has a cough and cold, and promotes restful sleep.

  6. Step 6

Start drinking the milk laced with turmeric at the first signs of a cough to prevent it from getting worse, and to strengthen the immune system to ward off the flu and other infections.

  7. Step 7

Consult a doctor if the cough seems to be getting worse. A persistent cough that does not go away with home remedies needs the attention of a medical doctor.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add lesser turmeric if you don't like the taste.
  • Half a teaspoon of crushed ginger added to the milk will further intensify the anti inflammatory action of turmeric.
  • Consult your doctor before using turmeric if you suffer from gall stones.
