How to Do Pompadour Hair for Women

A pompadour is typically known as a hairstyle for men that was popular during the 1950s, however, many stylish women wear modern pompadours on the runway, on stage and even to a lesser degree, on a regular day.

Can't picture a pompadour? This rockabilly-inspired look is achieved when hair is brushed straight up and styled back into the hair to create a wave. Many women like high-fashion models or singers like Janelle Monae and La Roux, sport the flirty hairstyle.

In order to create a pompadour, it helps to have long bangs and short length in the back (or some product and hairpins for longer lengths). The style can also be done with a ponytail, cornrows and French braids. Does this Spark an idea?

    • 1

Make sure your hair hasn't been washed for at least a day because it will be harder to create the pompadour with newly washed hair, which is softer and more silky. Leave your hair down, and brush out any tangles before you start your pompadour.

    • 2

Take the portion of your bangs that you want to be raised and combed back for the puffed up part of the pompadour. Look at pictures of pompadours online, decide whether a wide or narrow pompadour will look best and part your hair accordingly. Keep the section to be pulled back out of the ponytail you will make with the rest of your hair.

    • 3

Create your hairline between the front hair you have pulled out and the rest of the hair. Take a 1-inch section of the hair you have pulled out and comb it back, or tease, using a fine-toothed comb. Continue combing each section, and push them up into a clump or pouf of hair.

Use a bristle brush to make you bangs look swooped back. Use a hairpin to hold the swoop in place, and make sure that you angle the pin toward your scalp and then your hairline. The front of your hair will now have a bump of puffed up hair, which is the pompadour.

Style the remaining back portions of your hair by taking out the elastic band and making a small ponytail. Use a medium-hold finishing spray to style your hair and keep it in place.
