Instructions

    • 1

Gather your materials and lay out the ad on your computer printer. Print the editorial content of your sign in large black letters on white paper in the landscape position. Color printing may also be used, but the economy of black on white is hard to match. Leave 2 inches around all four sides of the paper.

    • 2

Print on one side of the paper only and place two printed sheets back to back to make a stronger sign. Use heavy paper or cover stock for more permanent use.

    • 3

Fasten the two sheets together, back to back, with tape. Spread a 12-inch-by-12-inch clear plastic freezer bag on your work space and smooth out any wrinkles. Slip the sign into the bag with the open side of the bag facing down.

    • 4

With pliers, unwind the hook portion of the wire coat hanger and straighten it to its full length. Make an L shaped bend in the wire 4 inches from one end. Measure 12 inches in from that bend and make another L-shaped bend. Slip the wire into the plastic bag. You now have a sign with a 4-inch wire on one edge, 12 inches of wire across the top and a 20-inch wire running down one side and out at the bottom. Tape the plastic bag tightly across the bottom.

    • 5

Spread the wire on each side so it is firmly stretching the plastic bag and holding it taut. You should have approximately 8 inches of coat hanger wire sticking out from the bottom of the sign. Using this as the mounting post, push 6 inches into the ground. The sign should remain approximately 2 inches above the ground. Because your sign is mounted with only one leg it should move back and forth in a light breeze and draw more attention than would a still sign. It is easy to place on a lawn and also easy to remove when the political campaign or other event has ended. Since they hold up well they may be easily saved for the next event.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use two coat hangers per sign and you will have two mounting posts to keep it from moving in the wind. Use wide, clear packing tape for more rigidity. If placing signs in several locations for a political campaign or other event, keep a record of all locations so signs may be picked up and recycled after the event.

  • Set the yard sign back several feet from the sidewalk to prevent vandalism Check all community ordinances regarding yard signs If used for political campaigns, be sure and pick up all yard signs following the campaign
