MBOX is a universal file format used for storing email messages in a plain-text file with the extension .mbx. It is not proprietary to a single email system and is recognized by several different email clients. Outlook Express is an email client that stores your email in the .dbx file format, which is proprietary to Microsoft. Converting your email from Outlook Express to the .mbx format will allow you to open it using other email clients.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Export your Outlook Express mailbox. Click "File" and "Export" and select "Messages." Click "OK" and select the name of the profile that you want to export from the drop-down menu. Click "OK" again and select the radio button marked "All Folders." Click "OK" to finish exporting your mailbox.

  2. Step 2

Download DbxConv (see Resources). This is a free third-party program that allows you to convert your Outlook Express .dbx files to the MBOX format.

  3. Step 3

Create a new folder on your desktop to store your converted mailbox files. Move DbxConv.exe into this folder. Locate the folder on your hard drive where your exported Outlook Express files are stored, and copy those files into the folder you just created.

  4. Step 4

Open a DOS prompt by clicking "Start" and "Run" and typing "cmd," without the quotation marks, into the text box. Press "Enter."

  5. Step 5

Type in the path to the folder you created on your desktop. Type in the following command, replacing "YourProfileName" with the name of your Windows profile and "FolderName" with the name that you gave the new folder.

    cd Documents and Settings\YourProfileName\Desktop\FolderName

    Press "Enter."

  6. Step 6

Convert the Outlook Express files to .mbx. Type the following command into the DOS prompt and press "Enter."

    dbxconv Inbox.dbx

This will convert your Inbox into a file with the .mbx extension. Follow the same steps to convert the rest of your Outlook Express folders, replacing Inbox.dbx with the individual file names of each folder. For example, to convert your sent emails, you would type "dbxconv sent items.dbx" without the quotation marks. The .mbx files will be saved in the folder that you created in Step 3.
