Stop hemorrhoid pain

Hemorrhoids are--figuratively and literally--a pain in the butt. These swollen veins in the rectum or anus can happen to anyone and are typically caused by poor bowel habits, constipation, pregnancy, long periods of sitting, obesity and straining when having a bowel movement. Although hemorrhoids, particularly external hemorrhoids, can cause great discomfort and pain, many people are too embarrassed by the condition to seek help in dealing with this problem. However, there are some very easy steps you can take at home to stop hemorrhoidal pain.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak in a warm bath, ideally for about 15-20 minutes. This can not only relieve the burning and itching symptoms but can also help shrink the size of the hemorrhoids as well.

    • 2

Use ice packs to help with swelling. You can buy premade plastic ice packs from your local drugstore, or make your own.

    • 3

Take a pain reliever. Tylenol, Motrin or aspirin are all good choices.

    • 4

Try witch hazel for external hemorrhoids. There are many lotions, creams and other products with witch hazel as an ingredient that can help numb the pain.

    • 5

Try a hydrocortisone cream. This may help with the itching and burning associated with the hemorrhoid.

    • 6

Talk to your doctor. If all the other methods fail to relieve your hemorrhoidal pain, it is probably a good idea to talk to your doctor, even if you are embarrassed. Your doctor may be able to prescribe medication or treatment that may help. Your physician may also make additional recommendations of things you can do to prevent hemorrhoids.

Tips & Warnings

  • To prevent future hemorrhoids from occurring, avoid becoming constipated. Drink plenty of fluids and eat foods rich in fiber on a regular basis. Avoid constant sitting without a break and excessive straining when having a bowel movement.

  • If the above steps do not help stop your pain or if you have bleeding from your rectum or find blood in your stools, a more serious problem may be to blame. You should consult your doctor as soon as possible.
