Things You'll Need:
- 1 picket fence panel
- 2 fence posts and 2 post tops
- Sandpaper
- Stain or primer and paint
- Polyurethane
- Sponges or paint brushes
- Stud finder
- 2 wall hangers
- 2 wood shims
- Screws and screw driver
-
Step 1
Select the style of picket fence panel that you'd like for your headboard. Panels vary in height depending on the style you select, but the width of the panels is generally 8 feet without the posts. This is a good size for a king-sized bed, as you will have 5 inches of fencing that extends beyond either side of the mattress. Fence posts range from 1.5 inches to 4 inches wide. Select the style that works best for your decor and that fits your fencing.
-
Step 2
Sand the wood components of your fencing with medium-grade sandpaper to remove any rough spots. Remove the debris and then sand it again with light-grade sandpaper to remove any scratches.
-
Step 3
Stain or prime and paint the wood components of your fencing. Let it dry completely before you add a coat of polyurethane for protection and shine. Let it dry and add another coat of polyurethane for added sheen.
-
Step 4
Find the studs in the wall behind your bed and attach the wall hangers at the base of your fence posts and to the bottom of the wall. Depending on the type of hanger you select, you may need to attach a wood shim to the wall before you attach the hanger. This will allow for enough space between the wall and the top of your fence post. The posts will stand on the floor, but it's safer if you also attach them to the wall because they are not attached to the bed.
-
Step 5
Hang one of your fence posts. Attach the fencing to the post according to the manufacturer's instructions. Attach the other fence post to the fencing and then hang it on the wall.
