Use Handbrake to convert DVDs into smaller files such as .avis.

Handbrake is a software tool you can use to convert digital movies from one format to another. Handbrake does not decrypt commercial DVDs or Blu-ray disks, but you can use third-party DVD decryption software to help Handbrake with the conversion process to an .avi file. Avi files can be carried with you and watched on your computer, taking up less space and allowing you to leave the DVDs at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Handbrake from your Start menu and Programs sub-menu in Windows. On a Mac, it is listed under your applications.

    • 2

Insert the DVD you want to make into an .avi file in your DVD-ROM drive.

    • 3

Click on the "Source" menu and click on the DVD drive option.

    • 4

Use the pull-down menu labeled "Title" to choose the file you want to make into an .avi. On most DVDs the longest file is the movie.

    • 5

Push the "Browse" button next to the field labeled "Destination: File" and navigate to the folder where you want to save the .avi file. Press the OK button.

    • 6

Click on the drop-down menu labeled "Container" under "Output settings" and click on the .avi file option. If you want to add more titles from the DVD to the .avi file, press "Add to Queue" and repeat Steps 4-6.

    • 7

Press the "Start" button in the main menu at the top of the window.

Tips & Warnings

  • AnyDVD, DVD43, DVD Decrypter, DVDFab and Free DVD Decrypter are all options for decrypting a commercial DVD, and they can help Handbrake encode it to an .avi file. Each has its own instructions for use.

  • Do not use Handbrake or the DVD decrypting software for copyright infringement or to pirate DVDs illegally.
