Things You'll Need:
- Computer, Smartphone or other device with Internet capability
-
Step 1
Sign up with a free Internet service provider (ISP). Yes, they do exist. The only downside here is that the quality of service isn’t as good as a regular ISP. For example, you may have to view banner ads as part of the service and there may be a limit on the amount of time you can spend online each month. Also, you will probably have to use a dial-up connection if you use these services.
-
Step 2
Locate free Wi-Fi hotspots. There are many business establishments that offer free Internet access via Wi-Fi. Check locations such as bookstores, coffee shops and restaurants. Sometimes you can find large Wi-Fi hotspots that cover entire locations such as shopping centers or other popular commercial areas. People often list free Wi-Fi hotspots online, so do a search for your area and see what comes up.
-
Step 3
Use a neighbor’s network. While this method is unethical if used regularly, it’s good to keep in mind if you need to access the Internet immediately and you don’t have any other connection options. Basically, you just check the available networks on your laptop and if you’re in range of one, it will show up. Again, this method should only be used in "emergency" situations.
