Vatsu expert Sherri Silverman defines Vatsu as "the system of architecture, design, and sacred space from ancient India's Vedic tradition." At its core, Vatsu attempts to balance a home based on five elements: earth, water, air, fire and space These elements are strategically distributed through a home's nine zones: north, northwest, northeast, south, southwest, southeast, west, east and center. These concepts can be applied to an existing home but are better suited to a home designed for Vatsu. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a lot with a square or rectangular shape; Vastu is about balance and creating a carefully divided space. An odd-shaped lot will create design difficulties.

    • 2

Create a nine-square mandala in the shape of your lot. A nine-square mandala is simply a three-by-three grid with all squares of similar size (like a tic-tac-toe board).

    • 3

Use a compass determine true north and the other seven directions on your land. Do not use a map to determine this. It will not be as accurate.

    • 4

Label your mandala squares with the eight directions. The center square of the three-by-three grid should be labeled "center."

    • 5

Place your entrance somewhere in the north or northwest square.

    • 6

Place your living room behind your home's entrance.

    • 7

Place your bedrooms on the south side of the house.

    • 8

Place your bathrooms in the northwest or west.

    • 9

Place your kitchen in the southeast or northwest.

    • 10

When possible, leave the center square open. Similar to a Roman villa, a center garden is a marvelous use of this space.
