Things You'll Need:
- wood pellets
- calculator
- wood stove
- money
-
Step 1
Find a company that you want to buy your wood pellets from such as Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Pennington Seed, or other online stores depending on the area where you live. Most hardware stores don't seem to have a huge assortment so you might want to gather information from a few companies. This also depends on the type of pellets you like (soft or hard pellets, etc.).
-
Step 2
Get out your calculator to crunch some numbers. If you're good at math go ahead and figure it out in your head. Take the total price for the ton of pellets. Divide this amount by the number of bags you will get. The number will be the cost per bag on the ton of pellets you're thinking about buying.
For example a company was selling 1.4 tons of pellets for $389. So, 1.4 tons is 70 bags of wood pellets. This comes out to roughly $5.57 per bag. -
Step 3
Look locally for your products. Not only does it help environmentally as far as gas, but the biggest saver is in shipping and handling costs for you. Companies that specialize in shipping pellets usually deal in bulk and offer discounts so the more you buy the more you save, however not everyone is in this position.
-
Step 4
Do all of your math on the prices and write it out. Take your lowest bid into a local store and see if they will beat or meet that price. Spending the time to do the online and phone comparison shopping can also save you money later on and you'll appreciate it when you're warm in the winter. End of summer is a good time to start looking for pellets because everyone wants them when it's cold outside and prices rise. Get a jump on the crowd.
