How to Transfer a Vehicle Title to a New Owner

Each state title is different. You must sign your title to release ownership, but some states require notarized signatures or additional forms to complete a title transfer. Most states do not allow title transfers when a lien holder is listed on the title, even if the loan was satisfied years ago. You must provide your buyer with a lien release along with the title; otherwise, the buyer can't transfer ownership to his own name.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the front of your title to determine if it lists a lien holder. Make sure you have your lien release to provide to your buyer. If you don't, obtain a new lien release from your previous lender.

    • 2

Read over each section of the title before signing so you don't make a mistake. Some state titles list a section for sellers of boats or motorcycles even though the title was issued for a vehicle. Determine what other information the title requests, such as notarized signatures, an odometer statement or sales price.

    • 3

Check your vehicle's odometer and input the mileage in the correct section. Input the car's sales price if your title asks for it; not all titles require a sales price on the title.

    • 4

Sign and print your name in the seller's section before handing the title to your buyer or sign in front of a Notary if your state requires it. If the title lists a co-owner, leave enough room for the other owner's signature if a separate space isn't provided. Have the co-owner sign her name as well.

    • 5

Make a copy of the front and back of your title to keep for your records.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have any questions, call your state motor vehicle department to determine which sections of the title you have to complete. You can also visit your state's motor vehicle website to find more information.

  • Do not use whiteout, pencil or marker on a title. Don't scribble out mistakes, either, as this will void your title and you'll have to order a new one.
