How to Trace Pumpkin Face Patterns

In order to create the perfect Halloween pumpkin face, you most likely will want to use a pattern, either one you have found or one that you have created. Getting the design from paper to pumpkin is not a complex process, although it can take up a fair chunk of time depending on how detailed your pattern is. If you choose a pattern with very intricate details and small holes, be aware that the thinner the walls of your pumpkin are, the easier it will be to carve and that you may need a drill bit for the smaller details. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Create a pumpkin face pattern that you like. You can either find one online and print it out or draw your own on a paper with a pen.

    • 2

If desired, cut out the elements from your pattern, leaving at least an inch of clearance on all sides, in order to position them individually on the pumpkin. This would be appropriate for a very large pumpkin.

    • 3

Tape the paper or papers to your pumpkin, pattern side out, with sturdy tape. Don't obscure the pattern with the tape.

    • 4

Take the pin and punch holes in the paper along the outline. Space the holes only a millimeter apart for fine details and about three millimeters apart for larger elements. Pin holes don't need to be deep, just visible.

    • 5

Carefully remove the paper and the tape to reveal your traced outline, making sure to not damage the surface of the pumpkin when taking the tape off.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a large topped push pin for the work instead of a small topped pin to make holding it easier. If you don't have any tape, use extra push pins to hold the pattern on at different intervals of the outlines.

  • Be sure that you aren't moving the paper as you work. You'll get a crooked transfer on the pumpkin.
