Hand-tied wigs may be custom-made or purchased "ready-to-wear" When selecting and/or designing a wig for a client, remember that your client's comfort is as important as the way the wig looks. Therefore, it is important that you can offer special wig services that will help ensure your client's satisfaction. These services may include wig measurements and fitting, instructions on how to put on a wig, as well as blocking, cleaning, cutting and coloring and styling wigs.

Things You'll Need:

  • Measurement tape
  1. Step 1

Brush your client's hair as smoothly as possible. If the hair is too long, pin it.

  2. Step 2

Measure the circumference of the head, beginning at the hairline in the middle of the forehead and circling the entire head, running the tape just above the ears, around the back and returning to the starting point. Be sure the client's ears are not caught under the tape measure. The average hairline circumference is twenty two inches.

  3. Step 3

Measure the distance of the hairline from the center of the forehead over the crown to the nape hairline. For the most comfortable fit possible, bend the client's head back to find the spot at the base of the skull where the wig will rest.

  4. Step 4

Measure the distance from temple to temple (just above the ear) over the crown of the head.

  5. Step 5

Measure the distance from ear to ear (just above the ear) over the occipital bone. Some manufacturers may request that you measure the distance from ear to ear, along the nape hairline, and also the width of the nape area.
