How to Change the Frequency on a Wireless DSL

Changing the frequency on a wireless router improves performance in busy neighborhoods where several home networks compete for a signal. The frequency setting on a router is labeled as a "channel." Changing the channel on a Linksys router is configured in the device's control panel.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a web browser and type the IP address of the router into the navigation bar. For most routers, the IP address is 192.168.1.1.

    • 2

Enter your username and password into the prompt. This is the administration password to access the router's console.

    • 3

Click the "Wireless" tab. Select "Basic Wireless Settings." This opens a window with a "Channel" section. This section is where frequency settings are changed.

    • 4

Select channel 1, 6 or 11. These channels provide the clearest signal since they do not overlap other channels. Click the "Save" button and close the browser window.

    • 5

Reboot the wireless computers. A change in frequency drops wireless devices from the network. The computers need to be rebooted to find new network settings.
