How to Clean a Uni Air Filter
Air filters for motorcycles or dirt bikes are essential for keeping harmful dirt and debris out of the engine. Uni air filters are foam air filters designed to trap extra grime in the foam, allowing for longer running time between filter cleanings. When you do need to clean these filters, it isn't difficult, and it doesn't usually take very long--about 15 minutes to half an hour. In addition, you don't even have to make a special trip to the automotive store for cleaner; you can simply use liquid dish detergent (although using Uni filter cleaner is recommended).
Things You'll Need
- Warm water
- Grease-cutting dish soap or Uni air filter cleaner
- Bucket or sink
Instructions
-
-
1
Remove the foam filter. Tap or shake it lightly to remove any excess dirt not trapped in the filter.
-
2
Spray (if using Uni's cleaner) or pour (if using liquid dish soap) all over the filter. Cover it thoroughly; use plenty of cleaner.
-
-
3
Allow the cleaner to sit undisturbed on the filter for a few minutes. Then place it in warm water, agitating the water a little.
-
4
Put more cleaner on the filter. This is to ensure you've removed all old grease and contaminants. Rinse all cleaner off completely under warm water.
-
5
Allow the filter to air-dry. This shouldn't take very long, but complete drying is necessary before reoiling.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure you put cleaner on both sides (inside and out) of the filter. If using dish soap, make sure it is a good grease-cutting dish soap; some are better than others. Clean the filter frame before replacing the filter.
Let the filter dry all the way before oiling it. If you don't, the oil will trap moisture inside and may shorten the life of the filter.
