Make an fresh cucumber and onion salad to serve as a side dish to a meat, fish or chicken dinner. Use the sliced cucumber with onions salad as a substitute or addition to relish or pickles. Cucumbers when sliced along with sliced onions are inexpensive to buy, easy to make and delicious to eat.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • sliced cucumbers
  • sliced onion
  • salt
  • white vinegar
  • sour cream (optional)
  • (amounts depend on how much you make) Taste is the best test.
  1. Step 1
    select cucumbers
    select cucumbers

Buy large cucumbers to make the cucumber salad with onions. Make sure the cucumbers are a nice green color, feel solid to touch and are not soft inside. Thinly sliced cucumbers go a long way and leftovers taste even better the following day.

  2. Step 2

Scrub the outside skin of the cucumbers. You can leave the skin on or peel them off by using a potato peeler or a sharp paring knife. Make sure that you make very thin slices on both the cucumbers as well as the onions.

  3. Step 3

Place the cucumbers on a slicing board or plate or on top of a sheet of waxed paper on top of the kitchen table or counter. Using a sharp knife, make very thin slices of the cucumber and onions. Do not worry if the thin slices are only a half a slice. The thinner the cucumbers are sliced the better the cucumber salad will taste.

  4. Step 4
    sliced onions
    sliced onions

Slice the onions by repeating the process of the cucumbers. As with the cucumbers, the thinner the slices or half slices the more delicious the cucumber and onion salad when mixed together will look and taste.

  5. Step 5

Put the finished slices in a serving bowl. Pour the ingredients over and mix lightly using a wooden spoon or plastic spatula. Cover and place in the refrigerator. Use and enjoy the salad and remove it after an hour or so but the longer they remain in the refrigerator the better the sliced cucumbers and onions will taste.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add cut up pieces of tomato to the cucumber onion salad for a different taste. Cut the tomatoes in half, then in half again. If you are not sure they will taste good, then just make a small separate portion of the cucumber and onion salad as a taste test.
  • Mix a small amount of sour cream to the thinly sliced cucumber and onion salad for a different taste.
  • Do not over use the salt or any other ingredients. The next day the cucumber and onion salad will taste even better.
