How to Troubleshoot a 2005 Acura TL

The 2005 Acura TL is a mid-sized luxury sedan made by Honda Motors. It was introduced in 1996 to replace the Acura Vigor. The 2005 TL was part of the third generation of the vehicle. The only real upgrade from the previous year was the addition of a passenger airbag cutoff switch. While the Acura TL is known for its reliability, it is not without its problems, and there are a few issues with the 2005 TL that you'll have to troubleshoot. Fortunately, all of them are covered under factory service recalls.

Check the power steering hose in your TL for any cracking or unexplained damage. The 2005 Acura TL uses Honda's famous VTEC engine. Unfortunately, this high-revving engine produces a lot of heat. High sustained temperatures in the engine bay are known to cause the power steering pump to crack or degrade prematurely. If this happens, the power steering pump will start leaking power steering fluid. Have this item checked and replaced at no charge by taking your TL to an Acura dealership.

Check your Acura TL for a proper fuel pump relay energizing signal. When you turn the ignition to the "II" position, you should hear a very faint humming sound for roughly one to two seconds. This is the fuel pump relay energizing and starting the fuel pump. On the 2005 model, a coil wire inside the relay switch may malfunction or break unexpectedly, causing the fuel system to depressurize and the fuel pump to fail. When this happens, take your TL to an Acura dealership. They can replace the relay for you at no charge under the factory recall for this item.

Check the cowl and windshield washer breather port for signs of damage or water leakage into the windshield washer motor unit. If water seeps down into the windshield washer motor unit through the breather port (typically from a crack in the protective cowl on the bottom of the windshield near the wiper blade arms), it may corrode the motor's circuit board causing the motor to eventually fail. This issue can be fixed by taking your TL to an Acura dealer to be serviced under the factory recall for this item.
