Etiquette involves setting a precedence of genuine words and actions. Exhibiting good manners can have a positive impact in your personal and professional relationships. Simply knowing how to behave in social situations can defuse tension and even foster sustainable compromises. Although it can be difficult to overcome urges to "fight fire with fire," demonstrating etiquette can enhance your reputation as a well-adjusted colleague and companion.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Adhere to guidelines and regulations without complaining. It's not enough to follow rules if you're still making protests against them; this type of behavior undermines your attempts to show etiquette and can make you appear hypocritical. Stay in control of your body language to avoid exhibiting hostility, annoyance or anger when faced with rules. Following this advice, regardless of your setting, can make it easier to deal with adverse situations.

  2. Step 2

Skip the phony demeanor and smiles. Showing etiquette doesn't mean that you have to wear a permanent fake smile or mask. It simply means that you will strive to behave graciously in both pleasant and unpleasant situations. Exhibiting disingenuous behavior can actually prove counterproductive to your efforts. This is especially true in business where handshakes and verbal agreements often solidify important deals.

  3. Step 3

Rise above other people's attempts to make you angry. Avoid being baited into behaving badly by distancing yourself from negative people. When interaction with toxic attitudes is mandatory, keep your communication short and polite. Avoid losing your cool or making excuses for a lack of appropriate demeanor.

  4. Step 4

Think before you speak to avoid offending or insulting others. Although it may seem natural to yell back at a rude coworker or friend, doing so can harm your relationship dynamic. It can also make it easier to fall victim to negative behaviors and attitudes. Choose your words carefully, as picking the wrong words can damage feelings and connections.

  5. Step 5

Accept both compliments and criticism with tact and professionalism. Avoid being a sore winner or loser by learning how to react to feedback. While it may be ideal to receive only constructive criticism, it's essential to learn how to accept all types of input. Refrain from bragging about your achievements or throwing pity parties because of your shortcomings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Demonstrating your ability to "go with the flow" can elevate your reputation.
  • Avoid surrounding yourself with negative people, which can weaken your ability to remain polite and tactful.
