How to Plan a Server Room

Planning a server room is important to the safety and integrity of corporate data. A server room needs to be isolated from environmental elements like heat and moisture, and it needs to be in a secure location where others cannot access the computer. When planning a server room, there are several standards to follow.

  • Determine the appropriate size of the room. Server room requirements are determined by the amount of rack space needed for routers, switches and computers. Current technology continues to limit the space needed for a server, but with larger data centers may have hundreds or thousands of servers. When measuring the size requirements, ensure that you incorporate figures that leave room for expandability.

  • Choose a room that has space for high A/C requirements and low humidity. A server room can get quite hot especially with multiple servers. Constant A/C cooling needs to be incorporated in the server room planning. This includes multiple vents and units that remove moisture. Hot, humid rooms can lead to hardware failure and data loss.

  • Include plans for cable management areas. Hard wires that run from routers to the ceiling need to be properly tied using static-free string. Routers and hubs that have several cables connected need to be wired in an area where there is no traffic. Cabling can cause people to trip, and it can cause network outages due to broken cables.

  • Use tiles for flooring. Servers laid on carpet become hot due to poor ventilation and heat. Tile also stays cooler even during hotter months. When planning a server room, ensure it has tiled flooring for the best reduction of heat.

  • Install security systems inside the server room and on the doors. To protect the data and money invested in server software and hardware, install security codes for access into the room. Security cameras can be used inside and outside server rooms in case of theft.
