How to Get a Copy Social Security Card

You don't often need to show your Social Security card. The Social Security Administration recommends you not carry the card on you for this reason. However, occasionally you'll need to show it, usually for something important. If you've lost your original card, go ahead and request a replacement before you are caught without it.

Instructions

1. Open a Web browser and navigate to the U.S. Social Security Administration website. Click "Get or replace a Social Security card" under the Top Services list on the left side of the Web page.

2. Click on "Step 1." Select the options that apply to you. In most cases, if you are seeking a replacement card, you will select "An Adult," "Replacement" and "U.S. Born Citizen." Read the section entitled "What Original Documents Do I Need?" You are required to prove U.S. citizenship and your identity.

3. Click on "Step 2." Click the "Application for a Social Security Card, Form SS-5" link. Print out the form. Read the instructions and fill out the form completely.

4. Take or mail your application and required documentation to your local Social Security office. To find your local office, click on the "local Social Security office" link in the "Where To Take Or Mail The Application And Documents" section of the Web page.

5. Enter your ZIP code in the area indicated for information on your local Social Security office.
