Don't let your car get this bad.

Rust is not only an eyesore on a car but will grow on the car and eat away at it until there is nothing left. Rust is caused from oxidation when water, salt and road grim collect on exposed metal of the car. Rocks thrown up from the wheels will scratch the paint, leaving the metal exposed. Use touch up paint on these scratches to prevent rust from forming. Remove rust from a car immediately to prevent it from spreading to other parts of the car.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove rust by sanding it with 100-grit sandpaper until the bare metal can be seen.

    • 2

Sand the area with 120-grit sandpaper to remove the paint around the rust. Switch to 150-grit sandpaper and sand the metal until smooth.

    • 3

Tape newspaper around the area to be painted and over anything that is not going to be painted.

    • 4

Paint the area with three coats of car primer. Allow each coat of primer to dry for 10 minutes before applying the next coat. Let the primer dry for 24 hours.

    • 5

Paint a light coat of automotive touch up paint over the area. Choose a car paint that matches the color of the car. Apply enough coats of car paint to completely cover the primer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a body compound to fill holes if the rust has eaten through the metal.

  • Applying a coat of wax after the paint has dried will prevent scratches.

  • Do not attempt to paint a large area. Leave that for the professionals.
