Step 1
Check tire tread by measuring tread depth.
Once your tire tread depth reaches 1/16 of an inch it's time to get new tires. Measure tread depth using a penny as your guide. Place the penny into the tread grove with Lincoln's head face down into the tread grove. If some of Lincoln's head is covered by the tread, your tires have sufficient tread depth. If, however, Lincoln's head is fully visible, not covered by any tire tread, it's time to purchase new tires. -
Step 2
Check tire tread by using built-in wear indicators.
Most tire brands have built-in wear indicators that expose red bars when the tire tread needs to be replaced. If you are unsure if your tire has wear indicators, contact your tire retail store or tire manufacturer. -
Step 3
Check for uneven wearing of tire tread.
Tire tread may wear unevenly if your vehicle is misaligned or your tire's are under-inflated. Have your vehicle's alignment checked as directed by your owner's manual and check your tires' pressure monthly. Additionally, rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles or as directed by your owner's manual to fix and prevent uneven tire wear.
