Learn how to sell music

Getting your own music on iTunes, Rhapsody, or any other music-selling site is a matter of properly uploading the tracks through a music distribution site. The songs must be in the WAV format. Use a conversion program to change CD tracks to WAV files if necessary.

Visit a site designed to edit and sell digital music. Some of the options are CD Baby, SongCast, The Orchard and TuneCore. Create an account on that site.

      • 3

Use the directions on the site to upload music and vital information such as the name of the song and the artist. Add a graphic at least 1600 by 1600 in size and at least a 72 dpi resolution. The graphic is optional, but vital to attract attention to the music. The site will handle everything else to get the material on the retail sites.

Pay through PayPal or a credit card. It may take up to six weeks for the sites to list new music.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Check the pay scale and pay method of each site you want to use. As of 2011, iTunes paid the artist 70 cents for every copy sold.

    • Do NOT try to sell songs that you don't have copyright permission to sell. Original material is the way to go.

    • If you have a band, it is YOUR responsibility to split up the profit. TuneCore doesn't do it for you.
