Fortunately, there is a relatively simple way to retrieve some of the files you absolutely need, even if you failed to back up your drive.

Power down your computer and disconnect all the devices connected to it.

Open your computer. This is generally done by removing the screws in the back and lifting the computer's cover.

Disconnect the dead hard drive and remove it.

Place the hard drive into a freezer bag. This is to protect it from condensation.

Place the hard drive into a freezer for several hours. The longer you leave the hard drive in the freezer, the longer it will work.

Remove the hard drive from the freezer, put it back into your computer, and put the computer cover back in place. This should allow the hard drive to function for several minutes, giving you time to retrieve any necessary files.

Turn on the computer and put the flash drive into an empty USB port. Locate the files you want to back up and transfer them to your flash drive. Do it as quickly as possible, because the hard drive won't run forever.
