How to Install Microsoft Office 2003 Professional

The Microsoft Office suite is one of the most widely used software platforms in the world. Windows-based computers commonly come pre-installed with the standard version of Office, which includes popular programs Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. The Professional Edition of Microsoft Office 2003 includes the four base programs, as well as two additional programs, Access and Publisher, and Business Contact Manager, an address book add-on for Outlook. If you want Microsoft Office 2003 on your computer, you can easily install the program yourself.

Instructions

Place the Microsoft Office installation CD into the drive on your computer. The Microsoft Office 2003 setup will start automatically. If for some reason it does not, go to the "Start" menu and click on "My Computer." Double-click on the drive that the CD is in, which will display "OFFICE" in the title. This will launch the setup application.

    • 2

Enter the Microsoft Office 2003 product key on the first screen of the program setup. The product key is generally typed on a bright orange sticker that is located on the Certificate of Authenticity or on the CD case.

    • 3

Continue through the next two screens of the setup, entering requested information. The second page will ask for a username, your initials and your organization. This information has no impact on the operation of Office and can be skipped. On the third page, you will need to agree to the terms of the "End User License Agreement" in order to continue.

Choose an installation method. There are four choices: typical install, complete install, minimal install or custom install. The "typical install" will install only those programs that are most commonly used and the "complete install" installs all of the programs included with Microsoft Office 2003 Professional. Unless you know for sure that you will use only one or two of the programs, or have a limited amount of space on your hard drive, there is no reason to use the "minimal install" or "custom install options." A "complete install" is ideal. You get all of the programs and every piece of available program content, including all photos and clip art included with the program. When you have made your selection, click "Install." The Office suite will begin installing on your computer and progress will be monitored on the screen. It can take up to an hour for a complete install.

Check for updates. When the Microsoft Office 2003 Professional has finished installing, there will be one last screen with two selections. You can "Check the Web for Updates and Additional Downloads" and "Delete Installation Files." Put a check next to "Check the Web..." and click "Finish." A web browser will open on your computer with the Microsoft Office Update site in the window. You can search for any updates for Office 2003 on this page, and download and install them for free if there are any available. This will ensure that your Office suite is as up-to-date as possible.
