How to Change Your WordPress Password

WordPress is one of the most popular blogging platforms. It is available in two forms. The free option is to have a blog at WordPress.com. The other way is to have a self-hosted WordPress website. Code for the self-hosted version can be downloaded at WordPress.org. The steps to change a user's password are the same for both versions.

Instructions

    • 1

Sign in to the WordPress admin dashboard using your username and password. The signin URL will end in "/wp-admin/." For a WordPress.com blog, for example: http://yourblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/.

    • 2

The menu for the current versions of WordPress run down the left side of any page in the admin section. Select the "Users" menu option. This will take you to a list of all the users authorized for the site.

    • 3

Select the username for which you want to change the password. This will take you to the "Profile" screen for that user.

    • 4

You can change the password near the bottom of the page next to "New Password." Enter the same password twice. The password must be a minimum of seven characters long. The password strength indicator should indicate at least medium.

    • 5

When you are happy with the password strength and have entered it twice, select "Update" and the new password will be in effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should delete the "admin" username that the WordPress site was originally set up with and use personalized usernames.

  • Select random passwords to stop hacking into the admin section.

  • Make sure the email in the contact information on the profile page is correct. This is where a forgotten email will be sent.
