A URL (Universal Resource Locator) or domain name is what users type into a browser to go to a particular website. It typically starts with "www," continues with a name such as "google" and ends with an extension like "com" to form a complete URL: "www.google.com." You can easily buy a URL online.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Browse to a domain website such as GoDaddy. The link is under Resources below.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the URL you want is not already taken by entering the name in the Search box. Select an extension such as "com" from the drop-down.

  3. Step 3

Click the "Go" button. The website tells you whether the URL is available and under what extensions. If your name is already taken, the website offers variations on the name that you can use.

  4. Step 4

Click the name of the URL(s) that you want. You may want to choose several variations to prevent others from registering them under their accounts. Then click the "Add and Proceed to Checkout" button. The Contact page appears.

  5. Step 5

Enter your contact information and click the "Continue" button. The Registration page appears.

  6. Step 6

Choose any registration options, such as the length of time and website hosting. Then click the Continue button to display the Checkout page.

  7. Step 7

Review the domain names purchased, choose your payment method and agree with terms of service. Then click the "Continue with Checkout" button. Create any needed account information and then click the "Continue with Checkout" button.

  8. Step 8

Enter your billing and credit card information. Then click the "Place Your Order" button to finalize your order. You'll receive an email that confirms your purchase. You now own the URL for the length of time you specified. Be sure to renew your registration before the expiration date or someone else may buy the name when it expires.
