How to Go Platinum Blond if You Are Really a Brunette

Are you a brunette wondering if blonds really do have more fun? I've wondered too. (It is almost true) Anyway, being a brunette is a bad place to start if you want to be blond. I have found in my cosmetology career that brown hair can be a challenge to lighten, to say the least. The strongest developer used to lighten (40 Volume), either with color or bleach, will only lift the hair 4 levels. On a scale of 1 to 10, platinum is a level 12! Brown hair generally falls in the 1 (black) to 7 (light brown - dark blond). So any hair that is beyond a dark blond can be stubborn to lighten. I have done it, and you can too with some simple supplies from your local public beauty supply.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dark hair
  • 40 Volume peroxide developer
  • 10 Volume peroxide developer
  • Color Remover
  • Violet based toner or Platinum Haircolor.
  • Deep conditioning treatment
  • Protein filler
  • Color brush
  • Color bowl
  1. Step 1
You can buy just one packet of color remover for hair just beyond shoulder length and shorter.

Mix color remover with recommended volume peroxide developer. I use 40 volume, but know you risk more damage to your hair the higher volume you use. Follow instructions on the package and apply to hair. AVOID 1/4 inch from scalp, it may burn your scalp before all color is removed.

  2. Step 2

After color has been removed, wash hair thoroughly with clarifying shampoo. Your hair will not be easy to comb through. You should use a pick or wide tooth comb to gently detangle your hair.

  3. Step 3

Dry hair, or let it air dry.

  4. Step 4
Protein filler helps color distribute color evenly.

Apply protein filler all over hair, this will help color deposit evenly on your hair.

  5. Step 5

Mix toner or color with 10 or 20 volume peroxide. 10 volume if your hair is desired lightness, this will just deposit color. 20 Volume if your hair is still a bit darker than platinum shade.

  6. Step 6
    Platinum toner

Apply platinum color to hair and leave on hair approximately 20 minutes.

  7. Step 7

Rinse thoroughly and apply deep conditioner. For best results, cover with plastic grocery store bag and wrap towel around bag. This holds the heat in and deep conditioner will be more deeply penetrated into hair.

  8. Step 8

Rinse, apply desired styling product and style hair. Now, go out there and see if blonds really do have more fun!

Tips & Warnings
  • To add sheen to lightened hair, use a serum or shine mist. Don't use too much, you will look greasy!
  • This process will damage hair. It is an unfortunate evil necessity of extremely lightened hair.
  • Use caution with all products and follow all manufacturer's directions!

on 9/2/2009 I get bored looking at the same reflection too. LOL Drastic color changes are fun. I personally like blond the best though and I do have more fun - short red hair is pretty fun too. God bless.
