Compare Cordless Phones

Before you buy a cordless phone, you need to compare the different brands and features available. You want a phone that will work anywhere in your home or even outside in the yard. To compare cordless phones, you should know about the different features, batteries, channels and base features. You can choose multiple phone systems for your home or just one.

Instructions

    • 1

Compare the phone system bases. There are phones that have a charging base only and some that have a base with an answering machine, memo feature, speakerphone and dialing capabilities. The answering machine bases allow you to program the date and time. You can program memos and set your outgoing message. Some bases have a keypad for placing outbound calls while using the speakerphone.

    • 2

Compare the different systems with one handset or multiple handsets. Multiple handset systems have a cradle for each handset that plugs into an electrical outlet and does not need to be plugged into a phone jack. The main handset and base are connected to the phone outlet.

    • 3

Check cordless phone systems that have caller number and name ID features. Although this feature is standard on most phone systems, some do not offer this feature. For this feature to work, you must have the capability of receiving caller ID number and name from your phone company.

    • 4

Compare functions of the handsets. Some handsets have a speakerphone capability, mute and call transfer to another handset. If you need to be able to transfer a call from one handset to another handset, you need a handset with transferring capabilities because most cordless phones today with multiple handsets will not allow two handsets to be talked on at the same time.

    • 5

Compare other features of the handset such as the ability to change channels if you are having poor reception. Most handsets do come with a channel-changing button, redial and a delete button to clear the caller id. If you want a handset that stores popular phone numbers for speed dial, this should be another comparison. Some phones allow up to 50 phone numbers and some have only 10 or 20 memory slots.

    • 6

Compare phones for hearing and sight impaired capabilities if you need a phone that offers these features. Phones for hearing impaired persons will have a red blinking light and phones for sight will have larger backlit keypads.

    • 7

Compare the prices of cordless phones. Find at least three or four with the same feature cordless phone systems and compare the prices. When you buy a cordless phone, you pay more for popular brand names with the same features than a less known brand name. However, the phone systems will work the same way.
