Things You'll Need:
- old pillow cases
- plastic bags
- tissue paper
- duck tape
- plastic bins
- cedar chips
-
Step 1
CLEAN SWEATERS: No matter how you have treated your sweaters in the past, the first thing to do before putting them away is to clean them. Moths are attracted to your body oil and dirt, not the fibers. If you want to save money, most sweaters can be hand washed.
-
Step 2
PREPARE A STORAGE LOCATION: Decide where you want to store your sweaters. The location should be cool, dry and out of the way. It should also be memorable so you know where to look when the temperature drops. Container stores have many choices for plastic bins that will hold sweaters.
-
Step 3
CHOOSE A BAG TYPE: Pillow cases are great storage bags as they allow air to circulate and act as a barrier to moth larvae. Also pillow cases will hold several sweaters. If you want to use plastic bags, place a piece of tissue paper in the sweater fold to absorb any ambient moisture.
-
Step 4
CHOOSE A SEALER: Duck tape or a commercial plastic bag sealer will work to close the bags.
-
Step 5
ADD CEDAR CHIPS AND SEAL: Place the sealed sweater bags into the plastic bin. As a final deterrent to moths, add cedar chips, shavings or blocks into the bin. Seal with duck tape to make airtight. Label the bin.
