How to Delete the History on a Work PC

Whether it's for security or to hide activity from your boss, deleting browser history removes files from the cache so there is no trace of online activity on the local machine. Removing history from Firefox 3.0 and Internet Explorer 7 is accomplished through the applications' option menus. The proper steps of clearing browser history are by deleting cookies, cache and autofill information.

Instructions

  1. Internet Explorer

      Click the "Tools" menu item and select "Internet Options." This opens a window with several options to configure the browser.

      Click the "General" tab. Click the "Delete" button in the "Browsing History" section. This opens a window with a list of options.

      Delete browsing history by clicking the "Delete Files" button in the "History" section. This window also gives you the option to delete temporary Internet files, cookies, and autofill passwords and form values. For security, you should click the "Delete" button in each of these sections as well.

      Click the "OK" button to save changes and close the configuration window.

    Firefox

      Click the "Tools" menu and choose "Options." This opens the main configuration window for Firefox.

      Click the "Privacy" tab. In the section labeled "Private Data," click "Settings."

      Check the boxes in the new window that are labeled "Browser History," "Cookies," "Download History" and "Cache." Click the "OK" button.

      Click the "Clear Now" button in the section "Privacy Data." This is the same section as in Step 2.

      Click the "OK" button and close the configuration window.
