Close any running programs. Because a dial-up Internet connection is slow, you want most of the system resources to run the Internet. Close programs such as photo or video applications that use large amounts of RAM.

Close any additional browser windows you may have running. Leave open just one browser window to watch online TV shows.

Download and install a video accelerator program to increase buffering speed and minimize glitches when viewing TV shows. A video accelerator such as SpeedBit (see Resources) is free and improves the quality of your display when using a slow dial-up speed. Once it has been installed, it automatically launches every time you view a TV show and displays the message "Accelerated" to signify that it is improving the connection speed of the TV show.

Watch online TV shows during off-peak hours when the servers are not jammed with lots of people. Off-peak hours are considered daytime to about 9pm. After 9pm, you will often suffer slow buffering speeds and low connection speeds, especially using 56k dial-up.
